Blog Post 1

Hello! Welcome to my very first blog post for English 3450.

My potential research topic is going to be based on the idea of the importance of storytelling. I want to mainly focus on the importance of telling the truth, which means I will probably take the journalism side of things. Journalism is such an important aspect of keeping everyone in check and informed; however, many different influences are keeping people from consuming factually correct news or just news in general. This could be due to social media, algorithms, or AI. I also want to bring in law cases of when news organizations were caught publishing false information and the effect that had on the community. I don't want to just highlight the negative parts of journalism but also the good that it can do when done correctly. To do this, I think it would be beneficial to find old news articles that tell an important story or event that needed to be told. Additionally, if I wanted to continue along the lines of the importance of storytelling, I could discuss the negative effects of banning books. However, I am leaning more toward the journalism side of things to make the topic more focused.

Thanks for tuning in:) ✎✎✎

  1. Hi Alyssa,

I really like your topic! I am always a sucker for anything involving storytelling, but I love the twist of having a conversation about journalistic integrity. I agree that perfect honesty is the best nowadays with so much fake news and needless discourse online. Ethics is something very important for people in journalism to understand and has a perfect place in your research. Following that line of ethics is also the topic of AI and how it should be used. I think your opinions and research on the matter will be very important.

  2. Hi Alyssa,

Good start on your first blog!! As Owen has pointed out, there is really a need to do more research on the ethics of journalism, especially as you bring in the effects of viral social media posts, fake news, etc. I like the idea of narrowing it further such as looking at a specific type of social media (e.g., Facebook, X formerly Twitter, or other specific platforms) as well as hone it down to a specific current issue, and so forth. :)

Of course, other research angles for these topics are also possible. Feel free to start plowing through scholarly articles for ideas (I'll also introduce the Lit. Review writing assignment #1 next meeting) and once you're ready to identify your direction (or if you need more help), please let me know and maybe we can set a brief meeting to talk about it, ok?

    Am here --

    Dr. B
